Operations Area Manager Intern

While the world endures a crazy pandemic, I began a new job in the summer of 2020 as an Area Manager for the Amazon Operation Intern Program. The program began with two weeks of online curriculum focused on Amazon’s culture and the techniques behind being an Area Manager. I then was transferred to work at BNA5, the Sort Center in the middle of Nashville, TN. I learned how each package travels through the facility in order to meet the customer promise. Within a few weeks, I was “running the sort” and helping to make the calls about trucks and labor headcount. I discovered that the Area Managers had the laborious task of determining the exact headcount for shift planning which happened numerous times each day. I saw the problem, and with the permission of my supervisor, I worked towards creating a solution. I gathered data from various people in the organization and then began writing a VBA Excel program that would pull information from the Amazon clock-in website. This program, when run by the touch of a button, would let anyone with access know how many people were clocked-in at the facility, thus allowing decisions to be made about staffing which in turn optimized the labor force saving money and man-hours on the calculations. My team found this tool very useful and continued to use it after I was finished with the internship. I was glad that I could make a positive contribution to my team and the company as a whole since they had made such an impact on me during my time at Amazon.
